When you are creating a daily spiritual practice, it can be easy to come up with a routine that works for a while, and then fall off the wagon, to speak, because the seasons changed, life and your schedule adjusted, and the routine suddenly no longer works like it once did. This can be especially true in winter and at the holidays, when we are inundated by events, festivities and obligations that can upend our schedule.
That’s why it is so important to develop a daily spiritual practice that you can maintain throughout the year, adapting it to the seasons as needed. This is something I talk more deeply about in my program, Starlight Coven Inner Circle.I would love to work with you to help you not only develop a daily practice, but develop tools to adapt that practice through the seasons!
Today we are talking specifically about spiritual morning routines, as your daily spiritual practice may include a variety of routines throughout the day. Click here to check out my next post, on Magickal Winter Evening Routines!
If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, and especially North America, you probably observe Daylight Savings Time. That means that in the late fall/early winter, we set our clocks back an hour and all of a sudden, it gets light earlier in the morning (and gets dark earlier in the evening.) For some people, this makes it easier to get up in the morning, because it’s already daylight, but for others, the colder weather is a deterrent from getting out of bed. Regardless, there is a distinct change in the air this time of year!
Here are six elements to adapt or incorporate into your morning routine in the wintertime to keep you connected and on track:
Remain mindful. The most important thing in any season is just to remain mindful. If you do stray from your spiritual practice, just do what you can to return to it and to be mindful in all you do.
Make it easy to stay cozy in the morning. If getting up to a cold house is distinctly unappealing for you, make it easy for you to go about your spiritual practice while staying cozy. Bring an electric kettle into the bedroom so you can make tea from bed, pile on the blankets and keep your journals, crystals or other tools on the nightstand.
Take care to warm yourself from the inside out. If you do have the time in the morning, dedicate yourself to some warming practices, such as ritual bathing and sipping tea by a warm fire.
Take time to appreciate the beauty of winter.Especially if you live in a snowy or rainy area, it can be easy to slip into a rut of hating on the winter weather. Yes, it can be very inconvenient, can hold up your day and be generally cold and miserable. But witches are all about noticing the beauty in nature and finding beauty in unlikely places… so take a moment each morning to look out the window and find something beautiful in the wintry scene.
Use this time to turn inward and trust yourself. It can be difficult during this busy time of year to find the time for your more advanced magickal practices, such as pulling tarot cards daily or practicing magick spells. Instead of beating yourself up for that, take the winter as a time to turn inward and rely on your innate intuitive gifts.
Create connections with loved ones.Winter is the time to really turn to one another and take comfort and solace in our loved ones. When the weather is cold and dark, it can be especially comforting to feel connected to others. Find ways to incorporate this into the start of your day, such as writing your holiday cards or other loving notes in the morning, praying for the people you love or meditating with your partner.
